Sustainable Economic Transformation and Sustainable Finance Global Project: Egypt

Sustainable Finance in Egypt

Achieving sustainable economic growth is a high priority for Egypt, as evidenced by various national strategies. The “Egypt National Climate Change Strategy 2050,” adopted during the 27th UN Climate Change Conference (COP27) in 2022, provides a roadmap to achieve the updated Egypt Vision 2030 objectives with regard to addressing the challenges of climate change. The strategy encompasses sectoral and cross‑sectoral measures in response to climate change, aiming to attain the targeted economic and development goals through low‑emissions approaches. Particular emphasis is placed on the role of the private sector in climate finance.

Despite the central role attributed to Egypt’s financial sector in the economy, the financing portfolios of relevant financial system actors are not strategically aligned with promoting a sustainable economic transformation. Although progress in green financial products is evident, their use remains far below potential due to a lack of marketing strategies and investment criteria, among other factors. Internal structures (e.g., sustainability units) and sustainability strategies are still at an early stage in many financial institutions, and internationally recognised standards (e.g., for measuring financed emissions) are not widely applied. Overall, banks lack the technical and specialist capacities to strategically establish an organisation‑wide sustainable alignment and to meet sustainability reporting obligations.
