Sustainable Finance in India
India has taken important steps toward advancing sustainable finance, driven by its significant exposure to climate-related risks and substantial financing needs associated with its 2070 net-zero target. While India does not have a comprehensive national sustainable finance strategy, several important policy foundations are already in place. These include participation in international initiatives such as the Network for Greening the Financial System (NGFS) and the International Platform on Sustainable Finance (IPSF).
In parallel, India has made notable progress on sustainability disclosure. The Securities and Exchange Board of India (SEBI) introduced the Business Responsibility and Sustainability Reporting (BRSR) framework, which requires large listed companies to disclose material ESG risks, opportunities, targets and performance.
More broadly, sustainable finance considerations are still being progressively integrated into corporate governance and financial regulation, including prudential frameworks, fiduciary duties and investment practices.
