Sustainable Finance in Peru
In the past years, Peru has taken important steps to foster sustainable finance. These developments are informed by the National Competitiveness and Productivity Plan 2024 - 2030, which establishes the importance of fostering green financial instruments. With the Green Finance Roadmap, published in 2023, Peru’s Ministry of Environment and the Ministry of Economy and Finance set a clear path on how they seek to develop green finance, emphasizing the importance of both greening finance and financing green. In July 2025, the Supreme Decree No. 154-2025-EF set up a Multisectoral Commission for Peru’s Green Finance Taxonomy. Further strengthening the policy foundation, in September 2024, Peru’s financial sector regulator, the Superintendency of Banks, insurance and pension funds (SBS) published its sustainability roadmap.
Progressing on the communicated intentions, including the green taxonomy and sustainability disclosure regulations, is crucial to strengthen Peru’s sustainable finance markets. By creating a classification system for green activities, the taxonomy will provide certainty, comparability, and transparency to local and foreign investors as well as companies, encourage investment in sustainable activities, and facilitate the monitoring and reporting of green financing. A sustainability disclosure regulation will help standardise reporting practices, facilitate comparability, and embed the monitoring and disclosure of sustainability-related risks and opportunities in the Peruvian financial market.
